Germination - Promoting Effect with Seed - Coat Scarification in Korea Lawn Grass (Zoysia Japonica STEUD) Seeds

Abstract
The studies were carried out to investigate the germination promoting effect with seed coat scarification and to explore the useful method of seed propagation of Zoysia japonica STEUD.
1. The seed of Zoysia grass do not break dormant condition during dry storage, and the seed dormancy is assumed to be constituted by seed coat and dormant embryo.
2. The light requirement is not lost by decoating, and the true dormant factor which requires light to germinate exists in embryo.
3. Germination can be induced by light irradiation and the effect of light is enhanced by decoating or scarification.
4. The seed dormancy can be broken by tow temperature imbibition, and the effect of low temperature imbibition is enhanced by decoating or scarification.
5. Germination can not be induced by alternating temperature with intact seeds, but can be induce in decoated or scarified seed.
6. The germination is determined by the final irradiation (R/FR) whatever the previous irradiation is, there it is obvious that the action of phytochrome is closely related to the seed germination of this lawn grass, as universally seen in other plant systems.
